Spice Processing – Wet Milling of Salt
The PREMIUM PULMAN WET-MILL (HYDRO MILL) is specifically designed for grinding salt to precise particle sizes. In this method, purified brine is fed along with the salt, earning the system the alternate names WET-MILL or HYDRO MILL.
Salt crystals naturally have irregular and sharp edges, and traditional mechanical crushing tends to preserve these rough forms. However, free-flowing salt requires a smooth, rounded, and uniform shape to maintain its dryness and flowability.
This transformation is achieved through hydro milling. In this process:
- The brine/salt mixture is introduced into the wet mill.
- The rotor’s high speed, combined with the star-shaped hammers and breaker plates (serrated liners), facilitates grinding.
- A perforated stainless steel screen works in tandem with the brine to:
- Achieve the desired particle size,
- Round off the crystals,
- Eliminate sharp corners,
- Improve product quality by removing impurities like mud.
