Premium Pulman Rotary Airlock Valve
A rotary airlock valve is a key component in bulk material handling systems, designed to regulate the flow of materials between areas of varying pressure. It enables the controlled discharge of powders, granules, and other dry materials from hoppers, bins, or cyclones into conveying systems, while minimizing air or gas loss.
These valves are commonly used in pneumatic conveying, dust collection, and feeding applications across industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, plastics, and cement. Their ability to maintain consistent pressure and flow control makes them ideal for handling dry bulk materials efficiently and reliably.
Design & Construction
Rotary airlock valves typically feature a cast housing with a rotating rotor fitted inside. The rotor is equipped with multiple precision-machined vanes that rotate within the housing to transfer material while maintaining an airtight seal. This design helps to minimize air leakage and preserve pressure differentials between inlet and outlet zones.
The valve body and rotor can be constructed from a variety of materials depending on the application—such as stainless steel or cast iron—with surface treatments available for abrasion or corrosion resistance. The number of rotor vanes and the clearance between the rotor and housing are carefully engineered to match the specific handling requirements of different materials.
Working Principle
The rotary valve operates by rotating the vanes through a fixed housing. Material from a storage container falls into the pockets between the rotor blades. As the rotor turns, the material is carried to the discharge side, where it drops out due to gravity. This continuous rotation ensures steady feeding while limiting air or gas exchange between compartments.
Applications
Rotary airlock valves are widely used in:
- Pneumatic conveying systems
- Dust filtration units
- Cyclone collectors
- Batching and mixing processes
- Discharge systems for silos, bins, and hoppers
